How SEY works

Activity of inspectors

SEY has about 120 voluntary animal welfare inspectors and few dozens of animal welfare advisors around the country. They do earthly work in practice. By notifications they gain from people, they visit places suspected of treating or taking care of animals badly. Most cases are light and are fixed by advising and conversation. In serious cases, however, cases are transferred to authorities.

Local associations

SEY also has 40 member associations around country. Local animal welfare associations organize activity in their own region and many of them keep houses for caught animals. In addition to animal welfare inspections, sharing information and enlightening people about how to take good care of animals and how animals are satisfied is one of the most important form of activity in SEY.

Affect on society

Important way to take action is negotiations with authorities and presenting SEY’s view on law and decree suggestions related to animal protection. Alone, and operating with other organizations, SEY takes a stance out on animal related current subjects from puppy mills to problematic sea-gulls.

Co-operation

SEY has diverse co-operation between different facets, whose activity is related to animals: organizations on field of agriculture, wildlife protection organizations, kennel organizations, free-time fishing organizations, horse organizations and of course Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira) to name but a fKuva: SEYew. By affecting through those organizations SEY gets forth its’ views on animal policy without great dramatic and headings in papers. SEY also has various representatives in national board for test animals, where one can influence on animal tests in practice.

SEY is also part of lobbying organization Eurogroup for Animals with Animalia. By Eurogroup for Animals SEY is able to broadcast its’ views on animal protections in EU’s policymakers.

Eläinten viikko, Animal week

In SEY’s opinion, knowledge is as important as feeling in animal protection. SEY has dozens of different leaflets regarding animal welfare for both children and adults without charge. During Animal week, from 4th to 10th of October, SEY has every year different theme and complies free studying material for elementary schools and announcements for press and radio.

Eläinten ystävä –magazine

There is lot of diverse information on animals and protecting them in Finland in SEY’s own magazine, Eläinten ystävä. There are also pieces of information abroad and stories about animal fates, animal welfare inspectors and local associations. Magazine also contains expert advice in taking care of pets and helping natural animals. Magazine is released four times a year.
